WANHEDA’s “The Cenozoic Implosion” comes from “The Cambrian Explosion”. The Cambrian Explosion can be described as an event approximately 541 million years ago in the Cambrian period when most major animal phyla appeared in the fossil record, what resulted in the divergence of most modern animal species. The Cenozoic Era is the period from 66 million years ago to the present day and thus the current geological era. Cenozoic, derived from Greek, means “new life” and is also known as the Age of Mammals because of their domination in this era. Furthermore, the continents moved into their current positions during this era.

WANHEDA’s debut album talks about an “implosion” as the human race has, because of their selfishness, a large share in the exploitation of countless animal species. The album tells a story about the failing global ecosystem and the responsibility of people. Obviously there’s something bad going on but people are willing to find a solution for it. As there might be hope/light at the end of the tunnel, people put their heads together to form one nation. Unfortunately nobody wants to lose benefits for themselves, so egoism takes the upper hand again. The flaws of the human race become more visible than ever. Humanity failed. There is no second chance, there is no second earth. However, the general message behind the album can be applied to various world problems that remain unsolved due to failing policies.

Formed in 2016, the Belgian six-piece rose from obscurity in just a few years with the release of The Cenozoic Implosion in April 2018. Since then, the band has played live incessantly in support of the release, touring in and around Belgium and playing at dunk!festival in 2019.
